In recent years there has been a lot of worry and stress over what is actually in our food and in the household products we use in our day to day lives around our babies, children and family. There is also increasing concern about using cleaning products that do not damage the environment any further.
Of course there is nothing new about this but the lengths we are willing to go to avoid harming the environment any further are also being pushed.
We are no longer just avoiding the use of CFCs and recycling our plastics. We are looking for cleaning products that are more natural and less toxic for our environment, and rightly so!
Unfortunately the cost of these cleaning products is higher, often placing them in the more costly, luxury category of cleaning solutions.
Yes, it seems a conscience comes at a price! With this in mind we thought we would put together a little list of homemade alternatives you could make yourself and safely use around your home.
1. Baking Soda for Oven Cleaning
Use a combination of water and baking soda to create a paste to clean out your microwave and oven. Put the paste on the bottom of your oven and then wipe it off a few hours later to reveal shine without the chemicals.
2. Save Money on Magic Erasers
Save money by avoiding the big brand magic erasers. Instead get your hands on the melamine sponge in bulk online or through wholesalers and save money.
3. Make Scouring Powder
Yes, it may sound like a lot of work to go to but at least by making it yourself you will know exactly what is going into cleaning products that you use around your home so much.
Simply mix 2 parts baking soda with 1 part salt and another part borax substitute to make a scouring powder capable of getting through the toughest stains in baths and showers.

4. Choose Microfiber
How would you like to avoid cleaning solutions altogether? Ok, you may still need some cleaning solutions for some jobs in and around the home but by using microfiber cloths you can seriously cut down on the cost and use of solutions.
With just water you can clean a lot of the surfaces in your home by using it with just microfiber cloths and mops.
5. Vinegar Infused with Citrus
Make your own window cleaning solution with vinegar and citrus peels.
Bear in mind this will take a few days to reach its full potency so think ahead (a bit like marinating a chicken!)
Get yourself a jar and fill it with citrus peels. Over these pour undiluted white vinegar and leave the mixture for at least a few days, up to a couple of weeks before straining out the vinegar into another receptacle.
It is this vinegar that you can use to clean windows, mop floors and disinfect surfaces.
